Land of Iron has been awarded a substantial grant from Arts Council England to support major structural works to the historic mine environment.
Land of Iron invites tenders from suitably qualified and experienced conservation architects to support its “Tunnel Rescue” project. This former ironstone mining and industrial complex forms part of the North East’s nationally significant industrial heritage.
The site includes a range of historically valuable structures linked to 19th- and early 20th-century mining operations, including:
· Ventilation shafts and tunnels and associated brickwork
· Rail and incline structures
